After mastering the art of making our buckles, our creative instincts led us into developing a variety of attractive new finish options in both stainless steel and brass. During this process we have learned that with some of these buckles taking as much as four hours to complete (not including time to customize the webbing to the wearer’s length, process, package and ship an order, etc.), we may discontinue some of the more time-intensive finishes. While we are still making them, you can scroll down to view and order belts with these options.
Note: custom buckles are made to order, so it can take a week or so for us to make your buckle, prepare your belt and ship it to you. No two are identical.

Each buckle takes up to 4.5 hours to complete, with additional time required to laser cut and perforate holes in the webbing for the required belt length. Every buckle blank begins with the lengthy process of grinding and sanding the four corners, chamfering all eight front and back edges of the buckle, and bending the buckle, resulting an ergonomic and eye-pleasing roundness to every aspect of the buckle which also now matches the curvature of the human form, then counter-sinking, widening the four bolt and prong holes to the precise diameter and tapping threads into them, washing tapping fluids off the buckles, cleaning out the holes, and re-countersinking and hand-tapping the buckles a second time (sometimes 3x to ensure the bolts and prongs are flush with the buckle face), installing and tightening bolts and prongs in the buckle with the application of a super glue in the threads, heavy hammering around each of the bolts and prongs on the back of the buckle (to compress the metal and prevent them from being able to back out), cutting bolt and prong ends to the correct lengths, sanding the ends smooth, bullet-nosing and then bending the prongs, chamfering the bolt ends, and even rounding off the nuts for maximum belt comfort. In the midst of these steps are the painstaking procedures for creating the various finishes on the buckle face and sides. For example, the Sea Foam and Namib Sands finishes involve sanding the front and sides to a smooth finish, sanding again later on to remove blemishes produced during the many other procedures, hammering and polishing the buckle face and sides, sanding facets at varied angles into the tops of the “waves” produced by the hammering, and hand sculpting and then polishing and buffing the bolt and prong heads. This is all performed using a multitude of machines and custom jigs, with various materials used in the process (sand belts, tapping bits, countersinks, grinding and buffing wheels, cutting oils and cooling sprays, bluing fluid, polishing compounds, wipes, soaps, pipe cleaners, work gloves, etc.)
As light moves across the face of the buckle, random shards are highlighted, giving the buckle a different appearance from every angle. This finish is popular at shows where attendees can see the interplay of light on the shimmering streaks. Since introducing it, we have further refined this finish, and we even facet the individual bolt heads.

NEW! We have taken this buckle finish to the next level with a beautiful 3D scalloped effect. Each sculpted indentation is individually placed and oriented so that each one has a unique response to light. In addition, we also now customize the bolt and prong heads to complement the buckle finish. Each one is individually hand sculpted and then polished and buffed before being installed in the buckle. Each buckle takes hours to complete, resulting in a captivating effect, as the varied surface features reflect and absorb color and light at different angles.

NEW! We have taken this buckle finish to the next level with a gorgeous 3D scalloped effect. This is the same process applied to the stainless steel buckles (Tiger Camo above), with every sculpted indentation randomly placed and oriented. Bolt and prong heads are also now hand sculpted to complement the buckle surface. The ribbons of fine striations in the buckle face shimmer as they catch the light, reminiscent of the chatoyance in the Tigers’ Eye gem stones that the craftsman would find as a boy when exploring streams in the African bush.

We’ve taken our original brass Sea-Dog and Seafarer buckles to a new level with this hyper-hammered finish, in which the front and sides are all hammered. The indents are also broader and deeper, plus we separately hammer facets all over each individual bolt and prong head before installing them. It takes the better part of a day to make just one of these exquisite buckles.
