With this variation of our flush-faced Aeronaut belt buckle, we slowly laser anneal the American flag on the face of the buckle, followed by multiple passes to more deeply engrave the outlines of the Stars & Stripes. Getting an annealed finish requires fine tuning of the laser settings and de-focusing to the millimeter. Random structural color effects result from how the metal surface molecules are crystallized by the laser heat. At different angles to the light the buckle can produce reds, blues and other colors.

Note that the thin outlines of the four bolts and prongs, which are threaded and bonded into the buckle are blended into the buckle face, but remain visible when viewed from various angles. To craft these buckles takes time and heavy hand work. After crafting the buckle body we have to create our own custom prongs and bolts by hand, which after tightening into the buckle, we hammer extensively with a 4lb short-handled sledge hammer to compress out any gaps that might exist between the tapered heads and buckle face countersinks, and then grind the heads flush with the buckle. As with all our buckles, we also hammer the back side of the buckle, around the prongs and bolts, so that they can never “unscrew” from the buckle.
